Initially our research had focused on the Knollys Carey Boleyn ancestral lines. And over time the other lines emerged – ie via Brent Plantagenet lines.
Initial research focus : Catherine Carey, married Francis Knollys.
- Catherine and Francis Knollys’s descendant Dorothy Knollys married William Byam
- Dorothy and William Byam’s descendant Mary Byam married Daniel Mathew
- Mary and Daniel Mathew’s son Daniel Byam Mathew married Elizabeth Dering
- Daniel and Elizabeth Mathew’s son was Daniel Dering Mathew
- Note some suggest that Catherine Carey was the daughter of Henry VIII rather than Sir William Carey. Here I have chosen to have Sir William Carey as her father and to note the rumours of Henry VIII.
As noted previously, Daniel’s line from a Byam and Boleyn descendant, Dorothy Knollys. The extracts below, from Burkes Peerage of 1848, give an indication of the breadth and complexity of a part of Daniel’s ancestry :
Genealogy of Daniel Dering Mathew to David Christian:
So how does Daniel Dering Mathew fit into the ancestry of my husband, David Christian? It had long been believed that David’s 3x great grandmother Charlotte Johnson nee Oliver was in fact the daughter of Daniel Dering Mathew. In his will, Daniel had made substantial provisions for both Charlotte and her mother Bridget, Servant to Daniel, which many felt was rather convincing. Then in 2017 David Christian undertook DNA testing with Ancestry.com, and by 2019, he had a match with a descendant of the uncle of Daniel Dering Mathew. Specifically the match was from Cholmeley Dering, the brother of Daniel’s mother Elizabeth Mathew nee Dering – read more in this 2019 DNA post. Subsequently another suggested DNA match emerged in July 2020. However it was much further back and so there is some question as to whether is a true DNA match or is one via IBC (Identical by Chance) – read more in this 2020 DNA post.
