A Dering DNA Match with David Christian

David Christian undertook DNA testing with Ancestry.com in early 2017. Over two years later, in August 2019, a DNA match with another identified Dering descendant appeared in his list of suggested DNA matches.

Based on genealogical research, the Most Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA) for David and this DNA match was Sir Edward Dering – 6th Baronet of Surrendon Dering (1732 – 1798).

David descended from Elizabeth Mathew nee Dering (1765 – 1812), whilst his match descended from Elizabeth’s brother Cholmeley Dering (1766 – 1832). It appeared that David is a 7th cousin with this match – which is consistent with the match size of 9 cms over 1 segment only.

Note – There did not seem to be too many possibilities for any other common ancestral lines which might explain the DNA match.

So this match was in a quite different branch and was not connected to any of Daniel Dering Mathew’s Australian descendants. This supported the supposition that Charlotte Johnson nee Oliver was Daniel Dering Mathew’s daughter – note other evidence exists to support this premise.
